Freemasonry is a fraternity that teaches a system of morality through ritual and symbols. It is open to men of good character who believe in a Supreme Being and join of their own free will. It is not a religion and not a secret society, but a society with a few secrets: its modes of recognition.

• To join, a man must be of good character, meet the minimum age, believe in a Supreme Being and ask of his own free will.
• Joining involves a petition, an interview and a ballot by lodge members. The process usually takes a few months.
• Freemasonry is not a religion. It has no dogma or sacraments, and discussing religion in lodge is forbidden to keep harmony.
• Men of any faith can join. The neutral term “Great Architect of the Universe” lets them meet together. Atheists cannot join.
• The Master Mason (third) degree is the highest in Freemasonry. The Scottish Rite’s 33rd Degree is an honour, not a higher rank.
